Defining Success

Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that success is the degree or measure of succeeding in a favorable or desired outcome. According to Google, 78 Synonyms and Antonyms are associated with the word success. Several individuals believe that it is the amount of money we make or is defined by the number of awards we’ve received or measured based on our happiness.

If you ask 100 people about the definition of success, or what success means to them, they will give you 100 different answers. This is because every person has his/her own definition of it. Nevertheless, in this article, I would like to share with you a simple, yet effective, strategy with which you can become more successful and achieve what you want.

Define success on your terms, achieve it by your own rules & build a life you’re proud to live.
– Anne Sweeney

Success in the true sense means achieving what you want in life. Once you set a goal and accomplish it, that’s what brings success in your life. As I mentioned earlier, the actual definition of success is different for every individual. If you ask someone in his 30s, the purpose of success for that person would be financial stability. The money would be their priority and compromise other things in life.

For a eight-year-old girl, success would be getting best grades and becoming best student in every subject in school. Someone in his 50s would like to have a cordial relationship with their family which would help him lead a successful life. The definition of success alters as you age or there are alterations in your family circumstances. When we pass a certain stage in stage in life, we need to revisit our objectives and goals; therefore, our motivation and definition of success will shift. One must be clear about his goals before beginning to achieve them.

Be Clear of What Success is for You

Be specific about what you want in life. Those with an unclear vision won’t be able to formulate proper action plan to achieve it. Setting goals like earning more money or being happy is a vague concept as there is no way you can measure or track it. Ensure that you set goals that are measurable as well as realistic.

My FOUR-STEP Formula for Success

Achieving success isn’t a complicated & difficult task. If you wish to succeed in life, follow the 4-step formula and get where you want to be:

Create

Start creating the vision in your mind that you have achieved success. This is the most essential step that many people do not know its importance. You need to be clear of what you specifically want. In other words, what you want needs to be created in your mind first. The more specific you see, the stronger and more long-lasting your motivational drive will be. Once you start seeing or visualizing your success specifically, nothing can impede you from reaching there.

Commit

Are you ready to take action even when you don’t feel like it? Make sure that you don’t just say but are truly committed to achieving success in life. Say it aloud: “I commit myself to becoming….. and to doing…….”.

You can jot it down somewhere and read it to keep yourself going. It’s easy to define goals like starting a business or making more money, but you still have to commit yourself completely to the goal when difficulties arise. Put your 100 percent. In fact, you better put your 200% and go for it. This will help if you commit to your goal rather than being distracted by your present negative feelings.

Claim

Claiming means taking ownership of your ambitions. Claim it right away, even after you have accomplished it. Feel as if you have already achieved it. Act as if you are already successful and have all you wanted. Think that you have succeeded in your endeavors after beating all the odds. Speak with certainty; don’t simply say it if you don’t believe in it; say it with conviction and deep belief that you KNOW you have it. This is where you want to reach to enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

Conquer

Go for it, all in. Feel victory and maintain this positive attitude. Don’t give up until you conquer what you committed yourself to achieving and reaching.

You are one step away from your ambitions; go for it. Now that you’ve achieved it feel this positivity in you. Don’t look back or quit until the promises you made haven’t been achieved.

Things that Would Become an Impediment to Success

Avoid the following pitfalls as they impede as you continue to walk on the path of success:

Procrastination

Avoid saying, “I hope to do it”, or “I will do it later”, or even “I should do it sometime soon”. All these phrases mean that you’re procrastinating things that would impede the goals. The time won’t come once you start delaying or keep on postponing them.

Finding Faults

It’s absolutely fine to identify faults but don’t stick to them. If something is wrong, try to make it right instead of complaining about it, as saying try not to complain about rains and invent an umbrella.

Don't Doubt Your Beliefs.

A lot of things would try to bring you down. For example, when Astronauts were planning to land on the moon, people thought that they were crazy. These things will make you doubt your capabilities and feed negativity in your mind. Stop believing things you hear or come across and show them what achieving success feels like.

The Bottom Line

The roads to success are full of challenges. Only commitment and perseverance can take you to your goals.

Ask for Honest Feedback

Try to get honest feedback from the audience that will make you an excellent communicator in the future. It will highlight areas that need improvement which you might not have paid attention to. Don’t take the feedback personally and take steps to become better than before.
